Richard Burkart: Trumpet

Richard was Professor of Trumpet and Graduate Studies in Brass Instruments at the Ohio State University School of Music from 1971 to 1996. He developed an internationally respected trumpet studio with many of his former students performing in symphony orchestras in the U.S. and Europe; the U.S. service bands in Washington D.C.; the jazz idioms; and as university professors. He is currently Professor Emeritus at OSU and prior to his appointment there he was Professor of Brass Instruments and director of the Jazz Ensemble at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas f rom 1955-69. He received his doctorate in music from the University of Wisconsin in 1971.

He was born and raised in New Orleans, receiving his early training in classical and jazz styles. His advanced musical studies in classical music were done at LSU, receiving the BME, BM and MM degrees, and while there performed in jazz groups and big bands. As a youngster in New Orleans he played Dixieland; his teaching career centered on classical music; now, retired, the pendulum has swung back to playing Dixieland. He is a former member of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Little Symphony (a chamber orchestra) and former President, Vice President, and board member of the International Trumpet Guild.
